Hi there
After having pains in my chest since the beginning of the year, I've discovered I have costo. I've been worrying about it on and off for weeks now, thinking it could be breast cancer. But my lovely doc felt my chest (can't think of another way of putting it!) and I nearly jumped out of the seat! Apparently mine is to do with my breastbone, although my ribs lower down are sore but not so bad.
So at least I can stop worrying about it, all I need now is something to make it go away. I've tried Tramadol, Naproxen. Co-codamol, Paracetamol all without effect. Doc suggested Ibuleve gel, so I've got some which I've rubbed on, will see how it goes.

Gosh you poor love! I have never heard of this before , could you tell me what it is? Is it linked with RA?

Oh Lyn, I feel for you, I really do! I had that last year, and I was scared stiff thinking it mught be something more serious. I nearly went through the roof when the doc touched my sternum. I was worried it was to do with my heart. I hope the ibuleve works - I remember taking the tramadol slow-release, which knocked me out and left me in a haze! Take care, Kathleen x

Hi Lyn
I have this and have had it from the beginning with RA. Its extremely painful and I find it hard to wear a bra, all of the bras have wires on them I have even tried the most revolting granny bras with a bit of a wider girth nd it still hurt. so I am stuck with vests. It basically comes and goes like the RA and I try not to aggrevate it with wearing bras. i havent been given anything extra. I suppose the RA medicine helps it.

Hi Lynn, I have never been diagnosed with Costochonditis,
But I do remember going to my G.P with pains in my Breast bone several
years ago now.
She said that the bones in the sternum can be affected by R.A.
I had a few bouts with it and then it settled down.
Hope yours gets better too.

F.A.O Mari, Dear Mari, I read your post about not being able to wear a bra. Believe me I know what you mean because I can't anymore either! I was experiencing pain in my ribs and back and went to the Doctor several times about it. She thought it was a "strain". Sometimes I would have to take my bra off after only wearing it for a couple of hours and then I would try on all my bras to try and find a comfortable one and of course none of them was comfortable anymore! (I had always worn underwired bras so it was very strange indeed!) But my problem turned out to be , eventually, not R.A related but my Spine, where a vertabra eventually collapsed forwards exactly where any bra fastens. Luckily, I discovered"Sloggi" Comfort tops , which look like bras , they do them in Black or White, but they have no fastenings and still manage to give some support and are stretchy cotton. The main thing I have been so delighted about with them is that they stop any friction caused to your chest by the fabric of your clothes. I had begun to develop a skin irritation caused by this friction and my Sloggi tops cured it very quickly!At least they look like a bra and so made me feel like a female again. (The one thing with them is that you need to be strong in the hands and arms to pull them on.) Best wishes Fiona

Hello Lyn ouchy hope the gel helps other sufferes i know who have RA also have this they use and i do to heat a warm wheatie bag helps sooth it.i get it on breast bone and rib cage area. i to have issues with bras ive had stop wearing wired sort which i detest doing as give me more lift and style under clothes but pain needs respecting. glad you found out what causng must have made you very relieved. hope it settles for you soon. lv melly cuddly cats make my world seem so much more fun

I'm really pleased that at long last you know what the problem is. I think a lot of us suffer on and off with this and it really is horrid. I know Jenni has some very bad bouts of it.
Just take care - you'll have to lay off the pole dancing for a week or two to give yourself time to heal!

Just a quick comment- I get costo too.
phorpain gel I have found to be the best. Its on prescription. It is so painful at times it is like being stabbed!

Sorry to hear you have got Costochonditis, as well but this quite commonly accompanies RA but it normally comes and goes.
when you have it you need to rest and one of the things that make it hurt more is if you get yourself stressed as the tighter your muscles are the more pain it will cause the Jels are good for it but if it gets to bad your GP can give you a cortisone injection (if you are no allergitic to them) and this gives you a short period of time with less pain.
there is lots of information on different web sites about it but some are very confusing so when reading try and stick to the more reliable sites.
Hope you soon get some relieve from it

Thanks for your replies, it seems there are lots of you out there with the same problem. I liked the idea of the sloggi bras. I had no idea you could have a cortisone injection for this problem. I am trying the gel, rubbing it on 3 times a day, and , dare I say it, it seems to be helping.
The doc did say it may settle down in time, but as I now know, it comes and goes, just one more thing to get to us!

Re the bras, I discovered the sloggi ones a couple of months ago as my underwire ones were hurting, I think due to the fibro. They are so comfy and do a really good job. I get tenderness at the base of the breast bone all the time, GP says its nothing. Good luck with bras Lyn x xBARBARA

So can this be related to RA? I do hope the gel helps you Lyn.
I am not sure if this is any use but there are a brand of maternity bras called Bravado which are very soft and comfy.

I've been looking at websites that sell lingerie, and I've bought a Sloggi bra to try and 2 pairs of pretty lacy pants to cheer me up, even if no-one can see them!

aww lyn yes me also like barbara i bought soft cotton bras,god for you treat youself for me it fibro casuing pain swelling in soft tissue around back,chest area and ra causing costo whats it. i was big fan underwired bras coming round to soft ones,think il look at sloggi ones to i got vanity fair soft bras very nice. hope it eases of for you soon. lv melly cuddly cats make my world seem so much more fun
